Text & Photo: Atsuko Tanaka

Saran, a burgeoning young Thai rapper, journeyed to Japan as a featured guest for the "PLAYCODE" launch event hosted by Believe Japan, the Japanese arm of the renowned music company "Believe." Despite being a mere 19 years old, he delivered a poised performance that captivated the audience. We sat down with Saran to delve into his evolution as a rapper and his distinctive musical style.

-Is this your first visit to Japan? Please share your impressions of Japanese culture and its people.

Yes, this is my first time in Japan. I've visited Korea before, but Japan has always been a dream destination for me. I'm happy to finally be here. Tokyo is absolutely stunning, and the people got a remarkable sense of fashion.

-Which part of Thailand are you from originally? Were you exposed to Japanese culture from a young age?

I grew up in suburbs of Nonthaburi and currently reside in Rangsit, about an hour from Bangkok. Japanese anime and manga have been a part of my life since childhood.

-The hip-hop scene in Thailand appears to be thriving.

Yes, over the past four or five years, it has undergone remarkable growth. It's truly satisfying to see hip-hop challenging and dismantling its once-prevailing negative stereotypes while gaining widespread recognition in mainstream culture.

-Can you tell me how you got into hip-hop?

During my time at boarding school in Chonburi, a friend introduced me to local hip-hop, sparking my interest. At the age of 11, without access to a cellphone, I began crafting songs during my free time.

-How did your friends react?

My friends teased me initially. At that time, hip-hop wasn't widely embraced in our circles.

-What were your next steps in pursuing your musical endeavors?

I participated in an online rap battle show called "Audio Battle," creating an audition song and I uploaded on YouTube. Additionally, I auditioned for a hip-hop talent show called "THE RAPPER" and succeeded. Subsequently, facing expulsion from school, I decided to commit to music. I reached the semi-finals in my second appearance on "THE RAPPER" and clinched victory on my third attempt.

-Your triumph underscores your talent. It's been roughly nine years since you embarked on your rap journey, how do you perceive the evolution of the scene?

When I commenced rapping, it remained a niche genre in Thailand, with few prominent figures. However, it has since transitioned into the mainstream, boasting a diverse array of artists, some of whom are now earning a living as rappers. It's been a significant transformation.

-Do you listen to overseas or Japanese hip-hop?

I listen to American and European hip-hop. While I hadn't previously explored Japanese rap, I was impressed by Red Eye's performance at this event.

-If you have an opportunity, would you like to collaborate with a Japanese rapper?

Absolutely, I've collaborated with OG Thai rappers and would welcome the chance to collaborate with Japanese artists in the future.

-How would you describe your musical style in one word?

Authenticity. Whether inspired by personal experiences or those of my peers, I strive to convey genuine emotion through my music.

-Are there any phrases you find yourself using frequently lately?

I often find myself saying my name rapidly. Due to its pace, "Sran" can sound like "Saran." I incorporate it into chants and song intros.

-Could you share any ongoing projects you're currently involved in?

I recently hosted a live session on YouTube and am working on a new album slated for release by the end of this year.

-Exciting! What dreams and aspirations do you have for the future?

My focus with the upcoming album is not solely on the music but also on enhancing the quality of the music videos and production.

-Finally, what does hip-hop mean to you?

Hip-hop is my backbone and closest ally. It's empowered me to acquire things such as a home and a car, lifting me from a state of scarcity and reshaping my existence. Furthermore, during periods of uncertainty or self-reflection, I find solace in expressing my emotions through my music. Essentially, my songs act as unwavering allies, offering me a stage where I can openly share my thoughts and feelings without holding back.
