DJ CZA was born and raised in Medan, the north side of Indonesia. Influenced by his mother who was an aerobics instructor in the 80s and a collector of vinyls and cassette tapes. He was open to a lot of music like Michael Jackson since he was little, then he started listening to a lot of hip hop. When he was living in London around in 2000, he got into Djing. After he moved to Malaysia, he joined a DJ academy called “Playaz Universe” and learned turntablism skills.
The first turntable battle he participated was the VESTAX EXTRAVAGANZA in 2002. He was going against the seniors and he lost but learned a lot in the process. After he participated 3 competitions, he finally won DMC Malaysia in 2008.
He’s also a member of the Singaporean hip hop group, “Ahli Fiqir.” Their critically acclaim album, “Hari Ini Dalam Sejarah” won the Best production album at Anugerah Planet Muzik 2006 in Singapore. Shortly after, CZA founded Malaysia’s first turntablism group, “The Stylustiks” with DJ Uno and DJ Fuzz. They broke the barriers in Malaysian music and garnered the interest and respect of the international industry. So, how did he end up opening a boxing gym?
-I think a lot of people know you as a turntablist and DMC Malaysia’s champion, what inspired you to open the boxing gym?
I’ve been training Muay Thai since 2011, but there was no gym around so I wanted to have a place just for myself to train with my family and close friends. Then I got great feedback so I started to open it for public and kept it going since.
-Why did you start to do Muay Thai in the first place?
My wife got into it first and she inspired me to do it too, but the main reason was due to the nightly routine of DJing in clubs and not taking care of my diet caused some health issues.
-So you are healthier now.
Yes, a lot. Boxing training has helped me regain my strength and gave me the ability to DJ longer hours. Taking care of health is crucial these days and I feel the necessity as I get older.
-You’re not just the owner, but you also teach and train other people at the gym as well?
Yes, teaching kind of came naturally along the way. I just wanted to pass whatever knowledge I have on to the kids who are interested in training.
-What’s the concept or theme of your gym?
It’s a neighborhood gym that provides good training and great cardio.
-What kind of people have been coming there?
People all kinds of ages and so many different types with different backgrounds. They come from different areas and most of them love the courses.
-Do you have any special lessons?
We teach BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling/submissions from time to time to those that are interested in it.
-What was the most interesting incident happened in the gym?
The whole process of building the gym itself was crazy. On the launch day, we had a lot of walk-ins and didn’t have enough trainers to accommodate the applicants, but we managed in the end. Now everything is running as it should with the proper system.
-What’s the neighborhood like?
The area is still pretty much undeveloped, but it should be easy to find us using Waze or Google maps.
-So what kind of music have you been listening these days?
I’ve been listening to a lot of old school R&B, funk and the classics just because it's nostalgic. I miss those days when music gave me that feeling which today’s music is kinda lacking.
-Can you tell us about the hip hop scene in Indonesia now?
It’s growing as it should, more communities are developing and more rappers are coming up with their own style of rapping and production. Also a lot of events are happening around the regent since the pandemic is over. People are still hungry for entertainment, thus pushing the scene further.
-Who should we check out among the young rappers?
Tuan Tigabelas, Ariel Nayaka from Def Jam Indonesia and Mario Zwinkle from Hellhouse. They are my top 3 rappers in Indonesia right now. Each one of them have their own style of rap and have made moves even during the pandemic.
-What kind of advice would you give to younger DJs who wanna be like you?
Stay focused on your craft and self improvement is the key to success. Don't forget the reason why you fell in love with the art in the first place. Most importantly, don't stop.
-Lastly, give a message to the people who’re thinking of visiting your gym for the first time.
Enjoy the training and let's keep it moving.
